Tuesday, April 27, 2010 -> Week 4 Post
During this week's lesson, I have learnt about CSS, which is Cascading Style Sheets. CSS is used to add detail to html documents and is therefore an extremely useful tool when creating websites and other internet related content. CSS works by first creating a notepad document with all the elements which you wish to have in the document or part of the document in the HTML notepad file; then you link the HTML file to the CSS file and the effects in the CSS file will be in the HTML file. So long as the CSS file is on the same level as the HTML file, it will be linked. Therefore CSS is useful as you do not have to copy and paste large chunks of HTML to design different parts of a website, but you can just link it all to one CSS document and it will all be designed.

What I have leant about HTML:
HTML is extremely useful and essential on the internet as it is waht essentially makes a website. Without HTML websites would not exsist. Also, HTML can be very simple and also very complicated, the basic structure of HTML is simple, but for complicated websites, such as Facebook and other social networking sites, the HTML required can be many pages long.
I enjoy using HTML as it is fun to work with, creating websites and other things.

1) The social impact of new media technologies:
I feel that there are several social impacts of new media technologies, including the ability to communicate over long distances almost instantaneously. People can communicate face to face even though they live halfway around the globe from each other by means of webcams. This allows friends and relatives who have not seen each other for long periods of time to communicate.

2) Ethical issues on media usage and intellectual property:
There are several ethical issues on media usage and intellectual property one of which is copying. When a person copies someone elses work without permission he not only disrespecting the person by not asking for his permission he also commiting a crime by passing someone elses work as his own.

3) Blog/ Website diferences:
A blog is more about a person's own opinions and views, whereas a website is more for the people who visit the ebsite and the information on the website is generally useful to the perople who visit it.

Friday, March 26, 2010 -> Week 1 post
Things I have learnt about the internet:
1) How it originated:
The internet originated from the Pentagon's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) in September 1969. The goal was for scientists to share information at different locations.
2) What can it be used for:
It can be used to find information easily. It can also be used to communicate instantly over long distances.
3) What an IP address is:
Is a series of numbers which identify each computer or device connected to the internet.
4) The rules of netiquette:
Treat others as you would like them to treat you.
5) The different types of websites:
Portal, News, Informational, Business/ Marketing, Educational, Entertainment, Advocacy, Blog and Personal.
